MEDLINE

MEDLINE covers the international literature on biomedicine, including allied health fields, the biological and physical sciences, humanities, and information science as they relate to medicine and health care. It is produced/created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, and corresponds to the print indexes Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature, and International Nursing Index.

There are multiple methods of accessing MEDLINE under various names. The NLM also has a number of other databases and information resources directed toward more specific aspects of medicine.

Medline access via third-party gateways (available to OHSU authorized users only):

  1. Via OVID
    • Coverage: 1966-present
    • Updated weekly
    • Includes links to full text of some articles
    • Ability to limit searches to specific MeSH subdivisions; publication type of review articles; human or animal subjects, etc.
    • Please LOG OFF when you are finished searching, since there is a limit to the number of concurrent users.
  2. Via OCLC
    • Coverage: 1965-present
    • Updated daily
    • Good searching across multiple fields
    • Ability to limit to items in the OHSU Science & Engineering Library
  3. Via EBSCO
    • Coverage: 1965-present
    • Updated daily
    • Includes links to full text of some articles
    • Ability to limit searches to specific MeSH subdivisions; publication type of review articles; human or animal subjects, etc.
NLM access points to Medline (freely available):

  1. PubMed (NLM)
    • Coverage: 1966-present. May have the most current information.
    • Also has links to molecular biology databases of DNA/protein sequences and 3-D structure data.
    • Provides access to Medline, Premedline and citations supplied electronically by publishers.
    • Premedline: Daily updates of records with citation information and abstracts but no MESH headings.
    • Good searching software, keywords and Boolean operators
    • Links to OHSU electronic journals as well as publisher sites, which may have full-text
    • Journal Browser look up journal names, MEDLINE abbreviations, ISBNs
    • MESH Browser shows MESH subject terms associated with general usage words.

  2. Medlineplus:Medline via PubMed plus many consumer/patient information links.

Other free access points:

  1. BioMedNet: Search Medline using a free password. This is a pay-per-view site sponsored by Elsevier Publishing; many journals indexed in BioMedNet are available full text through ScienceDirect.
  2. BioMedCentral: An Internet publisher of "peer reviewed research across all areas of biology and medicine." Site includes over 60 full-text journals, freely available to all. All articles are indexed in PubMed and the full text is archived in PubMed Central.
