Orientation
Welcome to OHSU's Department of Science & Engineering!
We are pleased that you have chosen to continue your education here with us at the Department of Science & Engineering (DSE). You join a group of faculty, staff and fellow students who are committed to applying advanced scientific, engineering, and computational methodologies to complex problems of human and ecosystem health.
We take seriously our goal of educating tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, and managers in top-tier programs that prepare them for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and contribution. We know that you will find your time here at DSE to be an exciting and challenging one and we look forward to working with you. Again, a warm welcome to the OHSU Department of Science & Engineering!
New Student Orientation
The Office of Graduate Studies holds a formal orientation program on the Friday before classes start for fall term. More details about the day will be available in late summer.
Individual academic divisions may also offer program-specific orientations during the week before fall classes begin. Divisions will contact you directly with additional information.
Pre-entrance immunizations
All full-time matriculated Department of Science & Engineering students must be immunized prior to the start of their first term. Information is available at www.ohsu.edu/academic/acad/health/preentryimmun.html, at which
you can download the Immune Status Form, and another form called Plan to Complete Form which you can use in two ways: as a worksheet guide to what you need, and as a communication device to let the Student Health Service know where you stand in the process. You will need to gather whatever information you have on all prior immunizations and see to it that you are up to date on all the requirements before you arrive for class.
Medical Insurance Requirements
Department of Science & Engineering students that are full-time (9 credits or above) are required to participate in the OHSU Medical Insurance program. Part-time students are not required to participate in the OHSU Medical Insurance plan. Information on the OHSU Medical Insurance Program is available at: www.ohsu.edu/academic/acad/health/healthinsurance.html
HIPAA Training
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a national regulation that governs the confidentiality of patient records. As part of the HIPAA compliance standards, OHSU is required to educate all students, staff and faculty on the basics of the HIPAA law. All students are required to complete the online HIPAA training within 30 days following the start of the term in which they matriculate. The online HIPAA training is available through the "Big Brain" training module at www.ohsu.edu/cc/ed/bb. Please print the Certificate of Completion at the end of the training and provide a copy to your academic department. Proof of HIPAA training is required to obtain a student ID.
Respect at the University Training
All students, staff and faculty are required to complete OHSU's Respect at the University (RAU) online training. This training is required within 30 days following the start of the term in which you matriculate. The online RAU training is available through the "Big Brain" training module at www.ohsu.edu/cc/ed/bb. Please print the Certificate of completion at the end of the training and provide a copy to your academic department. Proof of RAU training is required to obtain a student ID.
Background and Criminal History Disclosure
OHSU is committed to providing the safest possible environment for its entire community. When access is given to OHSU resources a background check is required to ensure that access is used appropriately. All full-time students are required to complete a background check. Additionally, part-time students wanting a student ID must also undergo a background check. The background check must be completed before obtaining a student ID, but no more than 90 days prior to the ID request. Prior criminal history does not necessarily disqualify a student from matriculation. The information on the form is considered confidential and will not be stored in your student file. The results of a background check will only be shared with the minimum number of people who need to know the information in order to make a decision about access. The background check form is available at www.ogi.edu/graduate_edu/forms/background.disclosure.pdf. Return your completed form to your academic department for signature and official submission.
