M.S. Biomedical Engineering

The master's degree program in BME is intended for people whose goal is to work in biomedical industry, academic research labs, teaching, and government agencies. This graduate program is also suitable for people who want to explore the field to better understand what biomedical engineers do, what the differences are between the various subspecialties, and what aspects of biomedical engineering are most appealing to them personally. Some people use the master's degree in BME as a stepping stone to further studies.

Applicants should have a B.S. degree in engineeering or biology and strong undergraduate records that include calculus through ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, probability and statistics, and basic programming skills in a higher-level language. Courses in biology are desirable but not required.

Our master's program includes a research thesis, so admission requires a match between the research interests of a student and a faculty advisor. Most students begin research in their first term.

Required courses include a course in scientific ethics and one in probability and statistical analysis. A minimum of four elective courses are also required; selection of the courses is done in consultation with the student's advisory committee. Courses are not limited to those offered in Biomedical Engineering but may be drawn from other graduate programs with the consent of the student's committee. It is recommended that students attend BME seminars every term (3 terms required).

Full-time students generally complete the program within two years or less. Some students' advisors have primary academic appointments in other departments, so research specializations are not limited to those of the core BME faculty. Research options can be discussed with the program director or academic coordinator.
