General Information

The Department of Biomedical Engineering integrates the disciplines of engineering, basic biomedical science and clinical science. Our graduate educational program is designed to provide a broad education across these disciplines as well as knowledge and in-depth research training in a specialty field. The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Biomedical Engineering (BME).

Departmental Degree Programs

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Biomedical Engineering (BME). The M.S. program is non-thesis program. A masters thesis can be done only with the consent of an advisor. A full-time student working toward a masters degree usually completes the program in less than two years. Financial support is not provided for M.S. students.

The Ph.D. program consists of core and elective courses plus research. Students who enter the Ph.D. program with advanced standing (e.g. with an M.S. degree) can apply for course waivers for subjects they have already mastered. Generally, admission to the Ph.D. program is conditional upon finding a match between a student's research interests and those of a primary advisor and also upon the availability of financial resources that the advisor can use to support the student's stipend, fees, and tuition. Most Ph.D. students receive financial support. Most students who enter the Ph.D. program without advanced standing and who work full-time toward a Ph.D. degree, complete the program in about five years.

For specific degree requirements please refer to the appropriate degree category below.

Generally, students are required to have taken organic chemistry and calculus through differential equations and linear algebra prior to admission. Additional suggested preparatory courses include: anatomy/physiology, one year of college biology, one year of calculus-based physics, basic programming skills in a higher-level language and some experience with numerical analysis software.

Courses in the Biomedical Engineering Department

The Master program requirements are 24 hours of core courses, and 21 hours of specialty courses.

Suggested preparatory prerequisites to the Biomedical Engineering program include: courses in anatomy/physiology, one year of college biology, organic chemistry, calculus through differential equations and linear algebra, one year of calculus-based physics, basic programming skills in a higher-level language and some experience with numerical analysis software.

The courses students will take may also depend on their research track. More information about BME courses could be found at the Degree requirements and BME course list.

How to Apply

Admission to the M.S. or Ph.D. program in the Department of Biomedical Engineering requires a B.S. degree in physics, mathematics or an engineering discipline with an acceptable grade point average and acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Exam. Highly qualified individuals with degrees in biology may be considered if they have demonstrated adequate quantitative skills.

General information concerning the application process can be found at the Admissions web site. For more information, please contact the Graduate Education office by e-mail at admissions@admin.ogi.edu or write to:

Office of Graduate Education,

What BME Students are Saying:

Andrew Owings, PhD BME student: "I was already local to the area and excited that they began a program in this community. Being associated with a teaching hospital provides many course and project opportunities as well as increased exposure to the 'biomedical' side of the 'engineering.'"

Ovidiu D. Iancu, PhD BME student: "One of the things that attracted me to the BME program was the quality of the research being produced. The dedication and success of the faculty is inspiring."

Lian Wang, PhD BME student: "Because there are quite a few very interesting and very exciting kinds of research going on here."
