Giving to OGI - Questions
What is the relationship between Oregon Health & Science University Foundation
and OGI School of Science & Engineering?
The OHSU Foundation is an independent, tax-exempt organization. Its mission
is to promote and further the development of OGI by raising, managing, and
disbursing private funds for the schools programs. Gifts to the OHSU Foundation
advance OGI by providing scholarships for outstanding students, supporting
faculty research and instruction, and enhancing facilities and program development
and growth. The partnership between the OHSU Foundation and OGI represents
a creative force dedicated to the most efficient and beneficial use of private
contributions.
Why does the OGI Annual Fund need my support?
Without philanthropic support from alumni, friends, faculty and staff,
OGI could not continue to fund its programs. Scientific education and research
are highly labor intensive. By supporting the Annual Fund, you are helping
us to provide the best education for tomorrow's leaders.
Why are scholarships, fellowships and stipends important?
OGI
admits students based on their academic strengths without regard to their
own or their families' ability to pay tuition. This year OGI will spend more
than $700,000 on scholarships and other sources of subsidized support to ensure
that we can continue to attract the very best students. OGI continues to build
on its endowment funds so that we can sustain our students for years to come.
Do most students pay full tuition?
No.
Many of our students receive some kind of discount or scholarship to offset
the total cost of tuition. Even students paying full tuition many times are
subsidized by the corporations where they are employed. Thanks to supporters
of the Annual Fund, OGI students pay only part of the "real" cost
of attending OGI.
Will my donation make a difference to the school?
Your gift may have more of an impact than you realize! Annual Fund support
makes a tremendous difference to OGI students and indicates not only your
commitment to OGI but also to scientific research and education as an investment
in the future. Corporations, grant agencies and foundations also look at our
percentages of gifts from alumni, trustees, and overall donor support as a
sign of the strength of the school
Is my gift tax deductible?
Yes. The OHSU Foundation is recognized under section 501(c)3 of the IRS Code,
and your contribution in support of OGI is tax deductible to the extent allowed
by law. A tax consultant can advise you about ways of giving most advantageous
to your financial situation.
Can I designate my gift?
You may contribute to one of the specific needs of the schools scholarships,
faculty enhancements, research centers, and program support. However, unrestricted
gifts give the school the greatest flexibility in allocating funds where they
are most needed.
