Special outreach to our new colleagues at OHSU

The summer quarter will be MST's first as a department of Oregon Health & Science University. The department offers many courses of interest to students, faculty, clinicians and researchers in the health fields. If you have responsibilities for management, leadership, or technology commercialization at OHSU, this is a special invitation to enroll in MST courses. If you are at OHSU and receive this newsletter, please post it for your students and colleagues to share.

All summer OGI courses are listed at http://www.ogi.edu/schedule, where you will find simple steps for registering. Check http://www.ogi.edu/MST/courses.html for links to MST syllabuses and schedules. Registration is open now!

Did we mention door prizes?

MST students: We know your school spirit is enough reason to call right now to register for the department's 5th Anniversary Celebration on June 23. Not to mention the great networking opportunity and the fantastic roster of speakers. And now, in addition, a number of local restaurants have donated gift certificates that we will pass on to you in random drawings.

A few local companies have offered to underwrite some of the event's costs. We will announce their names after all the sponsorship opportunities have been taken; call Fred Phillips at 503-748-1353 or Jack Raiton at 503-748-3075 to find out about sponsorship perks.

Register for the Celebration by calling the department at 503-748-1308, or return the form that accompanied your invitation by fax at (503)748-1268.

The speakers? Chuck Lillis, Peter Kohler, Bill Lattin, Duane Schulz, Rick Wills, Barbara Gaffney, John Harker, Mohan Nair, and Fred Phillips. Hear what they have to say and get to know them in person on the 23rd!

Merger Takes Place On July 1, 2001

On July 1, Oregon Graduate Institute became the OGI School of Science & Engineering at Oregon Health & Science University. The merger is the major point of excitement in higher education in the Northwest, and is an extraordinary opportunity for MST to better serve its traditional constituents and add new ones.

Lou Gerstner, CEO of IBM said a few months ago, "The future of this company is in the life sciences." And this from the June 4 EE Times interview with Intel's Gordon Moore :

EET: What core technologies excite you?

Moore: In electronics, it seems like more of the same. The area that I think will be really exciting will be some of this biotech stuff. What we're learning to do in biology has phenomenal opportunities for good and bad, and it will be fun to watch.

As a leading technological institute, OGI believes it should lead its constituents in the electronics, semiconductor, and software industries in the directions that will be important to them some years hence. There is no doubt that the convergence of life sciences and information sciences will be of great concern to your company and to YOU.

At the MST 5th Anniversary Celebration on June 23, MST department head Fred Phillips will unveil plans to leverage the OHSU merger to increase the value of your MST degree. Meanwhile, several MST students and other stakeholders have sent email with concerns, kudos, and some really good ideas about the merger and its implications for MST. If you have comments in any of those veins, please do communicate them to Dr. Phillips at fphillips@admin.ogi.edu. MST is committed to making the merger a great success for our traditional industry constituents - so let us know how you think our new affiliation can benefit your company and your career.

"Life of a CFO" a resounding success

May 10th's symposium "The Life of a CFO" drew 160 financial professionals to the Greenwood Inn. A highlight was a luncheon talk by US Bank Economist John Mitchell. "Who says economists don't have charisma?"

Proceeds from the symposium added over $15,000 to MST's Jim Hurd Endowment for Entrepreneurial Leadership.

Again, many thanks to the American Electronics Association for their splendid assistance, initiative, and generosity.

Enrichment opportunities for MST students

CSLU projects
OGI's Center for Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU) is one of the top three research centers for computer speech recognition and synthesis. CSLU produces a wide variety of advances with commercial potential. CSLU Director Dr. Jan van Santen encourages MST faculty to regard the Center as a source of projects for students.
Under the supervision of MST faculty, MST students may pursue projects with CSLU for term papers in existing classes, as independent study courses, or, under certain circumstances, as research assistants on grant-supported work. Students should inquire to MST faculty if working with CSLU is of interest.

Summer Japanese Language Study - HURRY!
"From: Bill Wiitala <wwiitala@yahoo.com>
Subject: Exchange: Japan's summer language program at Bryn Mawr College
To: fphillips@admin.ogi.edu
I would like to inform you of a last-minute scholarship offer for students interested in Exchange: Japan's summer language program, Japanese Language: Oral Concentration. The course is an excellent opportunity for intensive Japanese language study. And given that our scholarships are so generous this year, it is an opportunity that is very affordable. Plus, we have a few openings left for this summer.
Japanese Language: Oral Concentration is an 8-week course for beginning and low-intermediate students. It is from June 11th til August 3rd and involves 5 hours of class each day plus language lab work. Dr. Eleanor Jorden, author of the textbook, Japanese: The Spoken Language, is the director of the program, which is held at Bryn Mawr College, just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Tuition is $2,900--BUT if a student audits the course there is a $2550 scholarship available, so they would pay only $350 for the course.
If the student wants college credit (8 semester credits or 2 Bryn Mawr College units) the scholarship is for $1,500, so they would pay only $1,400. Books and materials are another $45. Room and board at Bryn Mawr College, if necessary, is $2300.
Please tell anyone interested to contact me immediately by telephone at 313-875-2521 or email at wwiitala@yahoo.com."

Dr. Bill Newman of ORTDA (Oregon technology development Account) asks for MST students interested in working on a marketing plan for products of the Oregon Medical Laser Center. Contact Bill at whn@alum.mit.edu.
